What the Heck Is a Yoga Stop?

Mini mats. No mirrors. Just nature, movement, and a little bit of fun.

If you've never been on a WalkAboutYoga hike, you might be wondering what exactly happens when we stop for yoga in the middle of the woods.

Are we doing headstands on tree stumps? Balancing on rocks? Hugging trees?

Well, the tree hugging is optional. 😂

A yoga stop is exactly what it sounds like. We pause along the trail, take in our surroundings, and practice a little yoga right where we are.

No studio. No fancy equipment. Just us and the great outdoors.

So, what actually happens?

During a typical WalkAboutYoga adventure, we make three or four yoga stops along the trail.

Sometimes we're standing beneath a canopy of trees. Sometimes we're beside a stream or overlooking a beautiful view.

We might stretch our arms toward the sky, move through a few standing poses, explore our balance, or simply close our eyes and listen to the sounds around us.

Each stop has its own purpose, but nothing is complicated or intimidating.

You don't need to know the names of the poses. You don't need to touch your toes. And you definitely don't need to be an experienced yogi.

Just come as you are.

Why stop at all?

Because most of us spend an awful lot of time rushing from one thing to the next.

Even when we're outdoors, we're often thinking about where we're going instead of noticing where we are.

A yoga stop changes that.

It invites us to notice the ground beneath our feet, the movement of our breath, and the world around us.

And sometimes, it simply gives us a chance to laugh together.

After more than 40 years of practicing yoga, I've come to believe that the practice isn't about perfect poses. It's about paying attention to how we move through life.

And then we keep walking.

That's the beauty of WalkAboutYoga.

We walk. We stop. We move. We breathe. We laugh. And we keep going.

At the end of our adventures, we often finish with a standing savasana and a little reflection.

Sometimes I ask everyone to think of three words that describe themselves.

Not three things they want to accomplish. Not three things they think they should be.

Just three words that describe who they are.

It's a small moment, but sometimes those are the ones that stay with us.

And that's something I've been thinking about lately: how do we carry those moments into the rest of our lives?

But that's a story for another day. 🌿
